Dr Reg and Dr Catherine came to Ethiopia
in 1959 to train midwives. The plight of the fistula patients broke
their hearts. The results are evident on these pages.
The need for midwives persists and in
fact, has never been greater. More mothers are dying than ever before;
complications from maternal health related matters are increasing daily,
leading to poorer economies, increased abandonment of children and complete
breakdown of families.
The aim of the midwifery college is to
train community midwives who are willing to return "home" and help their
neighbours, their sisters and their friends to have safe deliveries.
The College has the approval of the
Ministry of Health. Land has been acquired, adjacent to
Desta Mender but on a separate plot of land.
The site for the first building has been cleared, money has been promised
for this and for some running costs and supplies, etc. It is hoped that
after three years the graduates will leave with a BSc
in Community Midwifery. |
